The 1972 Munich Olympics were supposed to be a global celebration of sport and peace, but they were tragically marked by a terrorist attack.
Despite the tragedy, the Munich Games were also marked by great sporting performances. The American Mark Spitz won seven gold medals in swimming, setting a new record. The USSR was also very successful, winning the most medals.
These Olympic Games are remembered as a tragic combination of violence and sport, reminding everyone of the vulnerability of world events to terrorist acts.
