Roland Garros 1980 Poster - The instruments of the game

By Valerio Adami

With this very first poster of the Roland-Garros series emerged the very idea of this collection.

For the record, the project was launched by Eduardo Arroyo, Valerio Adami, Jean Lovera and Daniel Lelong (director of the eponymous gallery)

and presented not without surprise to Philippe Chatrier (at the time president of the FFT).

Forty-two years and 42 posters later,

this crazy project has turned into a signature ritual,

initiating each year the official launch of the mythical Parisian Grand Slam.

Valerio Adami signed the first poster of Roland Garros in 1980.

Born in 1935 in Bologna, he is a key figure of the Figuration Narrative.

The Italian artist, already familiar with the theme of tennis that he dedicates in several of his works before this one,

also possessed a great mastery in the constraining exercise of the poster and the use of space.
